The Definition of Courage

I used to believe that climbing was about courage and glory and the triumph of reaching a summit against the odds.

That was before I became a climber. Now I know better.

Climbing has taught me that the summit does not define us.

We are defined by the simple act of going toward our challenges.

That’s the definition of courage. You don’t need a mountain for that.

  1. Wonderful! I love the idea that every obstacle is a mountain and it just needs to be climbed one step at a time. I always try to jump to the top. Let me tell you, it doesn’t work.

  2. You’re going to laugh. My cats do this. When they hear a sound that frightens them, they move towards it. And here’s another one. I used to love a joke that ended with the punch line, “Life is a fountain.” Now I’m going to think of it this way: “Life is a mountain.” LL
